Americana, Reimagined

Celebrate a classic roadside icon – reimagined by today’s makers. Barns2Birdhouses transforms the iconic SEE ROCK CITY barn into a vibrant collection of one-of-a-kind birdhouse barns.

Since 1935, Rock City barns have stood as genuine highway Americana, their bold white-on-black signs compelling both snowbirds and Sunday drivers to a spot near Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they could “See Rock City.” At its peak, Clark Byers had painted over 900 barns in 19 states with the See Rock City message.

In celebration of this piece of Americana, Rock City invited youth, community members, and artists to participate in creating a large-scale birdhouse art installation for America’s 250.

Community Installations

The reimagination doesn’t stop at the gardens. Barns2Birdhouses extends beyond the mountain, placing community birdhouse barns created by local artists in select locations throughout Chattanooga and Walker County – turning the region into an open‑air celebration of American imagination.

Artist: Butch Anthony

Butch Anthony is a contemporary, self-taught artist, maker, and avid collector of objects and antiques. Raised on his family’s 80-acre property in Seale, Alabama, he continues to live and work there in a home he built by hand. He is the creator of the Museum of Wonder, The World’s First Drive Thru Museum, and The Possum Trot, immersive environments that reflect his distinctive vision.

Since the early 1990s, Anthony has created mixed-media works that combine found objects, natural materials, and unconventional techniques. Over the course of his career, he developed a unique artistic philosophy called Intertwanglelism—a term describing the blending of ideas, materials, and perspectives into a singular expressive form.

Anthony’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally, with venues including the Akron Museum of Art, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Black Rat Project in London. His work has also been featured in major publications and on television.
