A Howard School senior is receiving a special surprise from See Rock City Inc.!
Devonte Marchman was awarded this year’s Larry Ammons Memorial Scholarship, created in memory of longtime Rock City partner (employee) and Howard High School graduate Larry Ammons who died four years ago. The graduating senior was presented with a $5,000 check from SRC Inc. by Talent Acquisition Manager Tamarah Daniel at Howard’s Senior Awards Day on May 7.
Setting his sights on becoming a lineman, Devonte’s goal is to help the community overcome electrical problems that he often faced growing up, such as fuse box issues or storm damage. Self-sufficiency and financial independence is what Devonte hopes to achieve in his future career, and he’s already got a head start with two part-time jobs.
Devonte is a beloved member of the SRC Inc. family, working part-time at Starbucks, a gig which he says has been a great experience. In addition, Devonte is a part-time shift leader at Wendy’s in Lookout Valley, where he has worked for nearly two years.
Rock City’s memorial scholarship is given annually to a promising Howard High School
senior who is enrolled in any of Hamilton County Schools’ Future Ready Institutes, which
are programs that offer in-depth instruction in specific career fields.
The SRC Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Management at The Howard School is one of 28 FRIs offered at Hamilton County Schools. SRC’s FRI provides pathways in both culinary arts and hospitality and tourism management.
Howard’s SRC FRI graduating seniors were awarded their cords at a ceremony at Rock City earlier this month. The culinary students were invited to walk the trail and enjoy lunch with a special desert – the Clumpies ice cream flavor that they helped create.
Rock City congratulates Devonte and the hardworking Rock City FRI students! We’re honored to be a first job for many aspiring students.
