As part of our 75th Anniversary celebration, the world famous SEE ROCK CITY Barn Painters, along with Rock City’s 3rd generation owner Bill Chapin traveled across the country for a painting in Hebron Indiana, a rural area just south east of Chicago Illinois.

Bill Aylesworth, who had fond memories of Rock City as a child, contacted Rock City about painting the See Rock City message on his barn.  Aylesworth gained some sentimental value as a result of the added lettering on the side of the barn that reads “See 7 States from Rock City”.  Aylesworth who grew up on Lookout Mountain, visited Rock City as a child, and now can reconnect with this great southern icon from his own northern farm.

“This is the first such sign painted in Indiana in quite a few

years” stated Bill Chapin, Rock City’s 3rd generation owner.  “We painted our first barn in 1936, and used to have a lot of barns in Indiana back when people took these highways to the south, but then the Interstates came along and advertising got regulated by the federal government and it became uneconomical for us to do all of the compliance with the rules and regulations”

In 1935, Rock City began its world famous barn advertising campaign.  In its heyday there were almost 900 barns in the Midwest and Southeast that read “SEE ROCK CITY”.

Due to the Highway Beautification Act, which called for strict regulations on roadside signage, the number of barns has been reduced dramatically.  In addition to this newly painted barn there are now only 70 barns that are up kept by Rock City.
